Yashiro, triangle Japanese sanctuary necklace in sterling silver

 

Yashiro means "sanctuary" in Japanese. This necklace is composed of a silver chain with a triangular pendant. The triangle, as a point of transition between two worlds, symbolizes unity and movement for the Japanese, embodying the activity necessary to achieve Enlightenment.

The pendant is engraved with a Japanese motif called "shippo". This design is created by overlapping quarters of circles of the same size, giving it the appearance of light fragments, flower petals, or stars. The connections of the circles extend in all directions, symbolizing infinity and harmony. For the Japanese, the shippo motif represents the seven treasures of Buddhism: gold, silver, pearl, coral, crystal, agate, and lapis lazuli. The shippo motif was highly popular during the Edo period (1600-1868), especially on women’s kimonos, symbolizing prosperity and harmonious relationships.

In our sanctuary, the shippo motif is complemented by stylized flowers, particularly cherry blossoms. In Japan, the cherry blossom, or sakura, symbolizes the ephemeral nature of beauty and life. It is also a symbol of good luck, commonly used in tea ceremonies and weddings. Cherry blossoms have the unique characteristic of opening when hot water is poured over them, adding an element of surprise and renewal to their symbolism.

This necklace is a true work of art, carrying deep meanings and ancient traditions within it. It invites contemplation and reflection on the fleeting beauty of life and the spiritual treasures we cherish.
