Vegvisir, viking ring in sterling silver

The Vegvísir is a symbol of Icelandic and Viking origin, designed to help its bearer navigate through unfavorable conditions. Often referred to as the "Viking compass" or "Nordic compass," it is intended to prevent its bearer from getting lost.

The Vegvísir is part of the "Galdrastafir," a collection of Icelandic magical symbols drawn from old grimoires dating back to the 17th century. Among these grimoires, the Huld manuscript, written by Geir Vigfússon (1813–1880), is particularly notable. However, the use of these symbols is much older, likely dating back to the medieval period. Used as magical talismans, the Galdrastafir are crafted from Celtic rune motifs, which are attributed with various properties, including protection.

The term Vegvísir is derived from two Icelandic words: "vegur" and "vísir." "Vegur" means "path, road," and "vísir" means "guide." Thus, Vegvísir can be literally translated as "guidepost" or "wayfinder."

A common interpretation of the Vegvísir is that each branch of this symbol represents one of the nine worlds of Norse mythology, with Midgard at the center. This interpretation underscores the significance of the Vegvísir not only as a navigation tool but also as a symbolic representation of the Norse universe and its interconnected worlds.

The Galdrastafir, including the Vegvísir, are an integral part of Icelandic folklore. They are often engraved on personal items such as rings, amulets, and pendants, serving as talismans for protection and guidance.

If you are fascinated by Norse legends and their symbols, this ring adorned with the Vegvísir will be perfect for you. Discover all the Icelandic motifs here and let yourself be guided by the magic of the ancient Vikings.
