Serpiente de agua, mexican zapotec meander ring in silver

This engraved ring, named "Serpiente de Agua" (water serpent in Spanish), draws inspiration from an ancient motif originating from one of the greatest pre-Hispanic treasures discovered in Mexico. The design of this ring is a replica of the one found in Tomb 7 of the Monte Albán archaeological zone, located in the state of Oaxaca, a landmark site of the Zapotec culture. Monte Albán was the capital of the Zapotec empire until around 800 AD. After its abandonment, the Mixtecs, another ethnic group from Oaxaca, continued to venerate this place by burying an important figure there.

The ring from Tomb 7, surrounded by mysteries and various interpretations, could be linked to water according to some specialists. The same Greek key motifs are found on the facades of the palaces of Mitla and the tombs of Yagul, made with small stone blocks forming mosaics.

Among the many interpretations of this motif, one of the most recent suggests that it symbolizes water, represented by a serpent. In the region of Oaxaca, a small aquatic serpent has become the symbol of the water element and one of the attributes of the rain god, Cocijo (known as Tlaloc among the Aztecs and Chac among the Mayas). The motif of the ring could represent the eyes of the rain god, formed by the body of the rain serpent, thus reinforcing its connection to water and fertility.

The design inspired by pre-Columbian Mexico does not encircle the ring completely, leaving a smooth space that can vary depending on the size of your finger. This feature allows for subtle personalization while highlighting the ancient art and cultural richness of Mesoamerican civilizations.

By wearing the "Serpiente de Agua" ring, you wear a piece of history, a connection to an ancient civilization, and a celebration of the profound symbolism of water and nature. It is a piece of jewelry that combines aesthetics and history, perfect for those who appreciate cultural treasures and timeless symbols.

The band is between 8 and 9 mm large (0.315 - 0.354 inches).

This is a custom order. Please, specify your ring size when you order it. Thanks!

Thickness of the ring: this model can be made with thicknesses of 1 mm, 1.3 mm or 1.6 mm. For reference, go to the last photo of the slideshow.

Important: depending on your finger size, the solder at the back of your ring will show an interruption in the pattern with a plain vertical and in order to keep an overall harmony.
