ABOUT
The "Persephone with Pomegranate" pendant is a custom commission that captures the essence and mystery of the Greek myth of Persephone. Precisely crafted, this piece of jewelry takes the form of a pomegranate fruit sliced in half, revealing an intricately engraved interior with geometric patterns. The two circles with rays, evoking the sun, symbolize the duality of Persephone: light and darkness, life and death.
Enhanced with a small garnet cabochon of deep red, the pendant recalls the color of pomegranate seeds, symbolizing passion and fertility.
On the back of this pendant, an engraved quote refers to the Orphic hymn to Persephone:
"O Persephone, you nourish all always and kill them too."
This quote comes from a collection of Orphic hymns probably compiled in the third century CE in Pergamon, a city in modern-day Turkey. It underscores the ambivalent nature of Persephone, nurturing and destructive.
According to legend, Persephone, daughter of Demeter, the goddess of harvest, was abducted by Hades, the god of the underworld, to become his wife. Desperate over her daughter’s disappearance, Demeter roamed the earth in search of her, leaving the fields barren and the world to wither. Faced with impending famine, Zeus ordered Persephone to be returned to her mother. However, unwilling to lose his wife, Hades made her eat six pomegranate seeds, thus binding her forever to the underworld. To appease tensions, Zeus decreed that Persephone would spend six months of the year with her mother on earth, in spring and summer, and the other six months with her husband in the underworld, in autumn and winter. Thus, Persephone became the symbol of the cycle of life, renewal, and seasonal transformation.
The "Persephone with Pomegranate" pendant is a piece imbued with symbolism and historical significance. It celebrates fertility, prosperity, and the eternal cycle of life, while paying homage to the power and complexity of the myth of Persephone. This unique piece of jewelry is a true declaration of love for Greek mythology and craftsmanship.
