Perception, zapotec diamond ring in sterling silver

The Perception ring is a refined homage to the cultural and artistic heritage of the Zapotecs, a pre-Hispanic civilization that flourished in what is now the state of Oaxaca, Mexico. Adorned with a distinctive geometric pattern, this ring features a diamond shape surrounded by small triangles, a design deeply rooted in Zapotec tradition.

The Zapotecs, one of the most important cultures of ancient Mexico, left behind majestic archaeological sites such as Monte Alban and Mitla. These sites bear witness to their grandeur and artistic sophistication. The so-called "greca" decorations, consisting of intricate geometric motifs, were ubiquitous in the ornamentation of facades, tombs, ceramics, and likely clothing.

Today, these geometric motifs endure among the Zapotec people, particularly in the rugs and embroidered garments crafted by local artisans. The Perception ring draws inspiration from this rich tradition, capturing the essence of Zapotec designs and adapting them into a timeless and elegant form.

This geometric pattern invites reflection and interpretation. When visiting these archaeological sites, one can see that this simple diamond shape is perceived in various ways, depending on the origins and cultures of the observers. It is this diversity of interpretations that inspired the name of this ring, "Perception," symbolizing the idea that everything is a matter of perspective.

Even among the Zapotecs, interpretations vary. Most see this motif as a geometric representation of the Ojo de Dios, a protective talisman originally made with woven threads on a wooden cross. Although particularly known among the Huichol people, the Ojo de Dios has variants throughout Mexico. It is often perceived as an eye or a portal through which the gods can observe the human world.

Perception is a bridge between eras and cultures, a celebration of Zapotec craftsmanship and spirituality, and a constant reminder that beauty lies in the diversity of viewpoints.
