Ophite, ammonite studs earrings in sterling silver
These earrings are named Ophite, a term given by the Greeks to ammonites. The word "ophite" or "ophiens" comes from the Greek word meaning "snake." This attribution likely stems from the resemblance of the fossilized ammonite to a coiled and petrified serpent. Such a curious object naturally gave rise to numerous legends in antiquity.
For the Greeks, placing an ammonite under one’s pillow protected against insomnia. It was believed to improve vision, resolve sexual problems, and relieve snake bites. This belief in its healing and protective powers made it a precious and mystical object.
