Menhir of the lady of Saint Sernin, neolithic female stele necklace in silver

The Lady of Saint-Sernin menhir is an anthropomorphic stele made of sandstone dating back to the 3rd millennium BCE. It is located in Saint-Sernin-sur-Rance, in the department of Aveyron, France.

This menhir statue is among the oldest known representations of humans in Western Europe. The menhir statue depicts a female figure with a tattooed face, a ponytail, and wearing a series of necklaces on her long tunic. Her feminine characteristics are represented by her breast-like protrusions.

This stele is part of a group of other anthropomorphic statues where humans are depicted life-sized for the first time at the end of the Neolithic period.

Due to the antiquity of this stele and the absence of written records, it is difficult to determine its symbolism and use. The range of possibilities is vast and leaves room for numerous hypotheses, sometimes fanciful: goddess, important figure, heroine, feminine symbol, shaman, priestess...

In line with Paleolithic Venus figurines, there is also speculation about a cult of fertility, fecundity, or the mother goddess. It is sometimes taken to the extent of developing a Neolithic matriarchal society. However, it is safer to consider concepts of the cycle of life and death, and agrarian myths conceived during this Neolithic period. It could also be a precursor to the primordial goddesses found in many pantheons (Mesopotamian, Egyptian, Phoenician, Greek...).

Prehistory allows for various interpretations, and it would be easy to attribute multiple meanings to this small figurine.
