INSPIRATION
The "Labyrinth of Knossos" pendant is an archaeological replica of an ancient Greek coin — a tetradrachm minted by the city of Knossos on the island of Crete. This coin circulated throughout the Mediterranean basin between 200 and 67 BCE, a time when Cretan coinage was renowned for its distinctive iconography.
At the center of the pendant lies a circular labyrinth, characteristic of what is known as the classical or seven-circuit labyrinth — a symbolic geometric motif found in many ancient cultures. While some antique Knossian coins featured square labyrinths, the circular version, like the one reproduced here, is closely associated with the symbolic representation of the inner journey or spiritual initiation.
The Greek letters engraved on the coin, clearly visible on the pendant, indicate its origin: “of Knossos” (Κνωσσίων). Knossos, a major center of the Minoan civilization, is deeply tied to the myth of the labyrinth. According to Greek mythology, it was here that Daedalus, the legendary architect and inventor, constructed a vast labyrinth for King Minos. This intricate structure was meant to imprison the Minotaur — a mythical half-man, half-bull creature born of the forbidden union between Pasiphaë, Minos’s wife, and a divine bull. The monster was ultimately slain by the hero Theseus, who found his way out thanks to Ariadne’s thread.
Beyond myth, some researchers believe that the complex, sprawling architecture of Minoan palaces — especially that of Knossos — may have inspired the labyrinth legend itself: a maze-like network of rooms, corridors, and levels that could easily confuse and disorient visitors.
This pendant is thus more than a simple evocation of an ancient coin — it is a rich symbol of mystery, inner transformation, and the triumph of human ingenuity over darkness.
