Water chestnut flower, Japanese earrings in silver and pearl

Water Chestnut Flower is a pair of earrings crafted in 925 sterling silver, delicately engraved with the traditional Japanese motif known as kikkō hanabishi. This design blends two strong elements of Japanese iconography: the kikkō, a hexagon inspired by the turtle shell, and the hanabishi, a stylized floral pattern.

When repeated, the kikkō motif forms a honeycomb-like structure often found in textiles and the armor of samurai warriors. It carries deep symbolic meaning: the turtle, to which it refers, is a traditional emblem of longevity, wisdom, stability, and protection. In Japanese aesthetics, this geometric motif also conveys ideas of order, strength, and consistency.

At the heart of this pattern lies the water chestnut flower, or hishi, a stylized representation of the water caltrop (Trapa bicornis), an aquatic plant with diamond-shaped floating leaves. Rare and rich in meaning, this flower is an ancient symbol of perseverance, resilience, and inner nobility. In Japanese culture, it is also associated with the moral strength of the bushi, the samurai warriors, admired for its ability to grow in water while maintaining a strong and balanced form.

These earrings are shaped as a trio of interlocking hexagons, like a geometric crest, from which hangs an elongated teardrop-shaped pearl. This contrast between geometric precision and organic softness gives the piece a refined, minimalist Japanese elegance, full of balance and grace.
