Eoderoceras ammonite, Jurassic fossil necklace in sterling silver

The “Ammonite Eoderoceras” necklace, crafted in sterling silver, pays tribute to one of the ocean’s ancient and enigmatic creatures. Once masters of the seas, these beings are now frozen in stone, appearing to us as fossils—silent witnesses to a history hundreds of millions of years old. The ammonites’ shells, reminiscent of snails but far larger and more complex, reveal a fascinating internal architecture: a series of chambers separated by curved walls called septa, often forming intricate patterns known as sutures. These structures were not merely decorative; they enabled the ammonite to regulate its buoyancy—much like modern submarines—and offered safe refuge from predators.

The name "ammonite," inspired by the coiled shape of their shells, recalls the curved horns of rams. Pliny the Elder called them cornua Ammonis—the horns of Ammon—in reference to the Egyptian god Amun, often depicted with such horns. This symbolic link between fossilization, spiraled form, and ancient divinity imbues these fossils with a sacred dimension—where myth and nature converge.

Eoderoceras is a species of ammonite that lived during the Early Jurassic, around 190 million years ago. It is characterized by its regular spiral shape and pronounced ribbing, and belongs to a highly diverse group of ammonites. This pendant is a faithful reproduction, cast from a mold of an actual Eoderoceras fossil found on a beach in the Dorset region of England—a site renowned for its paleontological wealth and inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site under the name “Jurassic Coast.”

The ammonite transcends time and space to become a powerful symbol of life’s eternal cycles. Its spiral—often linked to the Fibonacci sequence—evokes infinity, organic growth, evolution, and also return and renewal. It reminds us that every ending marks the beginning of a new journey. Across the ages, ammonites have fascinated scholars, artists, and mystics alike, inviting reflection on nature’s laws, the passage of time, and the enduring mystery of life held within stone.
