Sami drum, lapland shamanic ceremonial instrument necklace in silver

This pendant is a silver replica of a Sami drum from Lapland, a region encompassing northern Sweden, Norway, Finland, and the Kola Peninsula in Russia. The Sami, or Sámi, are an indigenous people deeply rooted in this region.

The symbols on the drum act as a cognitive map for the shaman’s spiritual journey. Each design and symbol holds specific meaning, aiding the shaman in navigating between spiritual worlds. It is the shaman’s duty to understand the myths related to the origins of the universe, Sami culture, and codes, interpreting them during each session according to the seeker’s needs.

The symbols engraved on this Sami drum, which we have reproduced in silver, were meticulously described and interpreted by Friis and Rae in the 19th century, notably in "The White Sea Peninsula, a Journey in Russian Lapland and Karelia" by Edward Rae (London, 1881). This text primarily addresses Nordic mythology.

On this drum, the three realms of Norse mythology are represented: Asgard (paradise), Midgard (earth), and Niflheim (underworld). One interpretation tells the story of Thor setting out with the giant Hymir to fish for the great serpent Jörmungandr. In the upper part of the drum, there are also depictions of the two ravens, Hugin (thought) and Muninn (memory), Odin’s companions.

The interpretation of these symbols is complex and rich in detail. For a thorough study, we invite you to explore available works online at the following link:
